Kitselas Canyon
National Historic Site

Developing Kitselas Canyon as one of the finest cultural tourism destinations in British Columbia

What is a Kitselas Canyon
National Historic Site Project?

This Project is designed to re-establish a Kitselas Village as a basis for a cultural tourism initiative. It will add to the aboriginal component of the regional economy in forestry, fishing, service and tourism that can be shared equitably among aboriginal and non-aboriginal residents in the Terrace region. The location of the Historic Site Project is about fifteen kilometers east of the city of Terrace. The Project is within the boundaries of Kitselas Reserve #1, immediately adjacent to the Kitselas community of Gitaus.

How will the Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site Project benefit Kitselas First Nation?

Our vision is to make Kitselas Canyon, and the immediate surrounding area, one of the finest cultural tourism destinations in northwestern British Columbia. The Kitselas Canyon National Historic Site will feature a First Nations Cultural Centre. This will generate employment with local suppliers, such as craft and art contributors, and possible employment opportunity in the public sectors as well. The tourist trade will definitely enhance the economies of the surrounding communities of Terrace, Kitimat, and Prince Rupert.

Who are the
Kitselas First Nation People?

Kitselas is one of seven Tsimshian First Nations communities in northwestern B.C. Archaeological research indicate that the Kitselas Canyon was occupied by the Tsimshian Nation for at least
10,000 years.
