| Liz Obomsawin, President of Sekon Productions,
was commissioned by the Kitselas Treaty Office to produce
a documentary highlighting the benefits of a Kitselas Treaty.
Sekon Productions is an Aboriginal film company with extensive
experience in community-based projects. Ms. Obomsawin visited
the Terrace area in July and videotaped many of our members
engaged in their day to day activities and livelihoods,
and conducted limited interviews. Some re-enactments were
a real highlight of the initiative, including that of Walter
Wright meeting with the Royal Commission on Indian Affairs
in 1915.
The 22-minute documentary is entitled "A Clean Slate"
embodying the concept that, with a treaty, the past burdens
can be put behind us and our people can start fresh to
make the future bright and stable for our descendants.
It examines some of the historical reasons as to how the
Kitselas lost our sovereignty and our lands and how we
got to the point where we are today, in need of a treaty
to settle the hundred and fifty year old injustices done
to our people. As a narrative, it explores the future
through key points that a treaty can achieve, such as
defining and protecting our land and removing the burden
of the Indian Act. The documentary will prove to be informative
as well as entertaining as our people see family members
and friends on the video. The Documentary is available
at the Kitselas Band Office.
